About Me

Portrait: Gary L NicholsMy interest in photography started young playing with my parents Brownie camera and sometimes I even got to use film. I saved my allowance and purchased my first 35mm camera which was a Pentax H1a. During high school I worked part-time at Murphy Photo Supply selling Leica, Hasselblad and Pentax cameras. I also gained experience in B&W darkroom work and filmed school sporting events with a 16mm movie camera for teams to review the next day.

After I became a potojournalist I remember covering my first major news event back in the 70's. A US airliner was hijacked and the skyjacker bailed out over the county I was living in. For a few days my community was flooded with law enforcement and national press.

Over the years many of my photographs appeared in newspapers, magazines and AP wire service. Besides daily news assignments, I covered professional sporting events, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, Indy Racing League and the Pan AM games. Also, I won several awards with the Hoosier State Press Association along with other state wide photography competition and exhibitions.

After making a mid-life career change, I realize photography has been my heart's passion. I've found switching to digital was fun and exhilarating and it offers a whole new aspect to photography. Instead of covering news and sporting events, now I like photographing nature and God's creation. Also, I'm an instrument rated private pilot and enjoy aerial photography. I continue to attend workshops and seminars to maintain pace with the latest techniques, technology and equipment.
